Located at the gateway to the west of Quang Ninh province, Dong Trieu is situated at the intersection of three key economic zones in North Vietnam – Hanoi, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh.Dong Trieu lies in the middle of National Highway 18, with provincial highways 332, 333 and 345 connecting the town to others within the province. According to Noi Bai – Ha Long highway project planning cut through Dong Trieu, creating favorable conditions for further development of economic activity. Dong Trieu Town borders Son Dong district and Luc Nam district of Bac Giang province in the North, borders Chi Linh town of Hai Dương province in the West, border Thuy Nguyen district of Hai Phong city in the South and borders Uong Bi City in the East.

Dong Trieu – the land is rich in minerals such as coal, clay, and sand, which it can leverage to produce cement, ceramics, building materials, and power generation... Its terrain consists of mountains, hills and plains with fertile soils conducive to the development of many agricultural goods, (forestry, fruit trees, rice, livestock and aquaculture focus).

Prominent natural factors

Coal

Coal mining is the largest industry in Dong Trieu Town, with 3.606 million tonnes of coal produced in 2015, increasing 17.2% in comparison with production amount in previous year. Coal reserves are situated mostly in the communes Hong Thai Tay, Hong Thai Dong, Hoang Que, Yen Tho, Trang Luong, Binh Khe and Mao Khe ward. The amount of feasibly extractable reserves of Dong Trieu Town is approximately above 600 million tonnes and the region is a major mining center of Quang Ninh province.

Other resources and minerals: Dong Trieu produced significant amounts of construction materials such as bricks, building stone, construction sand and clay. The clay used to produce ceramic, porcelain and tiles is distributed in the communes of Binh Duong, Viet Dan, Trang An, Yen Tho, Binh Khe, Yen Duc, Kim Son, Hoang Que. Limestone reserves are also abundant in central Hong Thai and Yen Duc communes, and are primarily used in cement production. Tan Yen limestone quarry reserves amount to 350 million m3.

Land

Dong Trieu has a beautiful landscape and the whole region is hilly and mountainous. The total natural land area of Dong Trieu Town was 39,658ha, with 69.6% (27,653 ha) agricultural land, 23.2% (9,199 ha) non-agricultural land, and 7.2% (2,870 ha) of unused land. Within agricultural land,forest land occupies the largest area of 67.2%. Next, farming land accounted for 34%. Area of unused land is 2.870 ha, which is mainly mountainous land without forest cover. According to the land use plan, Dong Trieu Town intends to increase the amount of nonagricultural land, which will be used for business, mineral activities, and tourism. To fuel this increase, existing uses of agricultural land will be reduced, in particular year-long crop land, productive forest land, and aquaculture land, as well as unused land. However, there will be a reforestation effort to increase the area of forest land by ~2000 ha, boosting both forest production and forest cover. On net, there will be a slight increase in agricultural land area, projected to increase by 21.08 ha to 27,674.08 ha in 2020.

Water

Dong Trieu Town water resources consist of the river Cam, flowing into the river Da Bac, and 44 reservoirs, in which the 03 largest lakes are Lake Khe Che, Lake Ben Chau, and Lake Trai Loc I. In addition, the town has rivers running through it, including 5 km long river Dam, 15km long river Da Vach, 3km long river Vang, while the Kinh Thay River separates Dong Trieu from Hai Duong. These rivers are not large but contribute significantly to socio-economic development. There are large reserves of groundwater in Binh Khe, Duc Chinh, Trang An, Tan Viet communes that serve as water supplies for the people of Dong Trieu. There are seven groundwater sources used for drinking water supply for Dong Trieu and Mao Khe wards, Duc Chinh, Hong Phong, Hung Dao, Xuan Son, Yen Tho and Kim Son wards with a total capacity of 9,188 m3/day. Dong Trieu's 44 reservoirs contain water reserves of about 500 billion m3, of which about 24 lakes are used for water supply for production and people's daily lives.

Two main processing facilities provide clean water for households, concentrated in Dong Trieu and Mao Khe. In the town of Dong Trieu, water supply is extracted from 5 wells producing a total capacity of 4,288m3/day. This water supplies Dong Trieu regional center, Duc Chinh, Hong Phong, Hung Dao and Xuan Son communes.

In the Mao Khe areas, water supply is extracted from 1 well that produce a total capacity of 4,000m3/day. This water supplies the Mao Khe ward and Yen Tho commune, as well as the Kim Son industrial cluster.

Forests

From 2013 to 2015, forest area and forest cover increased from 17.415,56ha to 19.892,5ha.

Dong Trieu has a diverse climate with both mountainous and coastal climate. The town has an average annual temperature of 22.2 degree Celsius, an average rainfall of 1.856mm per year, and an average relative humidity of 81%. Overall, Dong Trieu has a favorable climate for economic development, for an diverse ecology and favorable living conditions. The micro-climate regions made of complex geographical location are suitable for the development of diverse agriculture, forestry, aquaculture and tourism.

Air temperature:


The annual average temperature 23,80C, ranging from 16,60C to 29,40C. The temperature in winter was low, the average temperature in January in the place were below 160C, the absolute minimum value to 3-50C.

High summer temperatures, the mean July reached 290C, the highest absolute values of up to 39 - 400C.

Rainfall regime:

- Rainfall: The average rainfall in Dong Trieu relatively low compared with other regions in the province, the average reached only 1444.0 mm (Quang Ha 2,625 mm).

- The distribution of seasonal rainfall: The rainy season lasts from May to October, accounting for 80-90% of the total annual rainfall, the wettest months are July, August and December 9 at rainy season from March 11 to April next year, low rainfall is only about 10-15% of the annual rainfall. The month with the lowest rainfall is in December and January.

Heavy:

Air humidity:
